"My name is Robert Walsh, and I am from Rathfarnham, now living in Cabra, Dublin. In July 2016, what began as a simple eye test turned my life upside down. I was told I had an 8cm brain tumour, and everything changed in an instant. I was rushed to Beaumont Hospital, where I underwent major surgery to remove the tumour and had a shunt inserted to help drain fluid from my brain.
For years I managed well, but in December 2023, I returned to Beaumont for what was expected to be a straightforward shunt revision. Unfortunately, things didn’t go as planned. I required multiple further surgeries and, for a time, I couldn’t walk or talk. I spent eight months in Beaumont, moving through intensive care, high dependency, and the neuro wards.
It was a long and difficult journey, but I was never alone. The nursing staff, healthcare assistants, consultants, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists, and porters — everyone treated me with kindness, patience, and unwavering support. Their dedication made all the difference in my recovery.
One memory that will stay with me forever is the day I left Beaumont for the National Rehabilitation Hospital. The staff of St Brigid’s Ward lined the hallway to say goodbye — it felt like a guard of honour. That moment reminded me of just how much support I had and how much these incredible people cared.
Today, I continue my rehabilitation at the NRH. It’s still a long road, and a recent setback meant another shunt revision in July 2025. I was due to take part in Beaumont’s Abseil Challenge that same week, but I hope to take on the challenge next year instead. Through it all, I’ve been reminded of the extraordinary care and support that helped me get this far".
