9 Things you should know about the Kerry Camino

Tuesday, 18 July, 2017

Join us this September (21st - 25th) on the Kerry Camino and experience the stunning beauty of the Dingle Peninsula on our three day walking trip. Some facts which may be of interest include ...

  1. The Kerry Camino was begun as a local initiative to promote walking, specifically along The Dingle Way between Tralee and Dingle.

  1. The inaugural walk took place on 16th of June 2012 and was opened by Mike Barry, the First Irish man to reach the South Pole and Mr Jimmy Deenihan TD, Minister for Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht.

  1. The Kerry Camino invites you to walk in the footsteps of St. Brendan, the Navigator, on this journey of contemplation and, on one of the most southerly stretches of the Wild Atlantic Way. During the years 512-530 AD, St Brendan set out from Kerry to spread the Word of God along the coast of Ireland, Scotland, Wales and Brittany.

  1. In 1992, a pewter scallop shell with a bronze-gilded statue of St James attached and mounted on a brooch was found in Ardfert Cathedral – only a few kilometres from Tralee. This was most likely a pilgrim’s badge brought back from the Camino de Santiago and, when found in a grave, suggests that the person had been a pilgrim to the apostle’s burial place in Santiago.

  1. Many Irish pilgrims going to Santiago departed from St James’s Gate in Dublin and that Kerry pilgrims’ point of departure for Spain was most likely St James’s Church in Dingle, from which they would sail to the port of La Coruna, there to join the way of St James.

  1. The official starting point of the Kerry Camino is St John the Baptist church in Tralee and the end point is St James’s Church in Dingle.

  1. The total distance is 30 miles or 50 kms, completed over three days.

  1. On the second day we overnight in the village of Annascaul the birth place of South Pole explorer, Tom Crean

  1. Walkers are provided with a pilgrims logbook and stamps are available at stations along the way.
