“From the day I was contacted by Beaumont, everything was super-efficient, and I couldn’t fault a single thing. I have so much love for everyone there.” - Kirsty Cully
In July 2022, thirty-three-year-old, Kirsty Cully from Blessington in Co. Wicklow was having some sudden and unexplained issues with her vision. Initial tests did not indicate what was causing these issues and only after a private MRI carried out on 14th September, Kirsty was told two weeks later on 27th September that she had a brain tumour and was referred to the Neurosurgical department in Beaumont Hospital.
Kirsty was seen by Neurosurgeon, Mr. Stephen MacNally, on 1st November and surgery to remove the tumour was immediately scheduled in November, just under three weeks after Kirsty’s diagnosis.
The surgery took seven and a half hours and that afternoon, Kirsty woke in Theatre Recovery feeling overwhelmingly bright and bubbly. There were some painful recovery days to follow.
Post-surgery, Kirsty is taking each day one at a time and has selflessly decided to share her brain tumour journey on social media while raising vital funds and awareness for Beaumont Hospital. On 7th February 2023, Kirsty went for her post-surgery follow up appointment and it was confirmed that her recovery is going well, and she remains inspiringly positive for the future.
She says “The staff at Beaumont Hospital were unbelievably amazing; Mr. MacNally’s surgical team along with all the staff in the Richmond Ward were an absolute godsend. I would have been lost without them. The support from all the staff there was unbelievable – from the maintenance staff to all the nurses, they kept me smiling every day of my recovery there. I am so grateful for every single one of them.”
Beaumont Hospital is The National Neurosurgical Centre for Ireland and accepts referrals from all over Ireland.
