Honour Your Heroes - Philip Mitchell

Tuesday, 06 September, 2016

Philip Mitchell from Swords has a genetic condition called Alport Syndrome which results in end-stage kidney disease, hearing loss and sometimes eye problems.

In 1967 and 1974, sadly two of his brothers who also had the condition died from the affects of the syndrome at the very young ages of 17 and 27 respectively. His own problems began when he was around 25 yrs old. Within a short time he was on dialysis and continued receiving treatment for 2/3 years before he received his first kidney transplant in 1984. This kidney served him well for 25 years before he began to fail and he ended up on dialysis once more in 2009.

Around that time, Philips eighteen year old daughter began to show the signs of Alports also and she received a kidney transplant.

On the 16th May this year, Philip was fortunate to receive the gift of a second kidney. At the Honour your Heroes reception he thanked the team of the St Martins Dialysis Unit for looking after him and his daughter through the years and also thanked the donors and their families whose generosity has given him new life on each occasion he received a new kidney.
